Google Marketing Live 2026: AI Max, QFC & What to Do
Google I/O and Marketing Live 2026 handed campaign execution and measurement to Gemini. What AI Max, Ask Advisor, and QFC mean before the September deadline.
Welcome back to the front row. Last week Google held two keynotes in two days — and the story isn't the features.
You already knew the platforms run your campaigns. This week they took something quieter and more permanent: the right to tell you whether those campaigns worked. The scoreboard now belongs to the same system playing the game.
The platforms took the wheel last year. Last week, they took the scoreboard.
Two keynotes. Two days. Google I/O on the 19th, Google Marketing Live on the 20th. Everyone covered the features. Almost nobody added them up.
Here's the sum. You no longer run your campaigns. And starting now, you don't keep score either.
The deadline that makes this real
Begin with the thing already on your calendar, whether you put it there or not. In September, Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets, and campaign-level broad match auto-upgrade to AI Max. There is no opt-out. The only lever you hold is whether you migrate on your terms or Google's.
Most people will wait. That's the mistake. Wait, and your account upgrades on default settings you didn't choose — ad-group structures flattened, negative keyword lists half-transferred, segmented page feeds traded for broad Final URL expansion. And the window is tight. The DSA-to-AI Max runway is about 5.5 months versus the 9 months you got for Smart Shopping to Performance Max in 2022. Forty percent less time, landing right on the Q4 on-ramp.
How the new stack actually works
Now layer last week on top of that deadline. AI Max already decides matching, asset generation, and where your traffic lands. Marketing Live extended the same logic across every surface.
Search ads stopped looking like ads. Google introduced Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers — Gemini builds creative tailored to a specific question and writes an independent explainer beside it. A new Business Agent for Leads drops a chat agent trained on your site directly inside the ad. The ad is no longer a destination. It's the answer.
Then Ask Advisor — one Gemini agent spanning Ads, Analytics, Merchant Center, and the Marketing Platform — moves in to recommend the changes. AI runs the campaign. AI proposes the optimizations. You approve.
The part nobody connected
That's the surface. The real signal is underneath it.
Google also brought Meridian into Analytics 360 and launched Qualified Future Conversions — a Gemini-powered metric that predicts whether today's ad engagement will turn into tomorrow's sale, using signals like branded search.
Read that again. The system that runs your campaign now also predicts whether it worked.
The loop just closed. The operator, the optimizer, and the scorekeeper are the same model. When the thing playing the game also writes the final score, you're not measuring performance anymore. You're accepting a forecast.
Where that leaves you
So take inventory of what's still yours. Targeting — gone to the machine. Creative generation — Asset Studio. Bidding — automated. And now the definition of success — a Gemini prediction.
What's left is the input layer. Your brand clarity. Your landing page. Your first-party data. The brief you hand the AI. And one thing almost nobody is checking: whether you're even visible in the AI answer at all. Your rank tells you you exist on Google. It tells you nothing about whether Gemini or ChatGPT would cite you when a qualified buyer asks.
What to do this week
Three moves, in order.
First, migrate now — voluntarily. Pull your last 90 days of search-term data, set your text guidelines, and configure the account yourself before September decides for you. Early migration is the only version of this where you keep control.
Second, write the brief. Your strategy is now an input, not an execution. Define the intent you want, the intent you don't, and how your brand should sound — in writing, before the AI fills the gap with its defaults.
Third, check the AI layer. Find out whether you're citable in AI answers today, while the gaps are still open and your competitors haven't claimed them.
The platforms took the wheel last year. Last week they took the scoreboard. The only thing left to own is the truth they grade you against.
Own your inputs.
PROMPT OF THE WEEK
Before September flattens your account, turn your last 90 days of search-term data into the brief that steers AI Max.
You are a senior paid-search strategist. Here is my last 90 days of Google Ads search-term data: [paste]. Identify the 10 highest-intent query themes that converted, the 5 themes that wasted spend, and write a 150-word AI Max text-guideline brief that tells Google's AI which intents to pursue, which to avoid, and how my brand should sound. Output three blocks: intent allow-list, intent block-list, brand voice rules.
You walk into the migration with a brief that directs the AI — instead of letting September's defaults direct you.
THIS WEEK
ChatGPT opened self-serve ads. OpenAI launched a self-serve ad platform and is rolling the pilot into new markets — the AI ad surface you've been watching is now one smaller advertisers can actually buy.
AI Mode crossed 1 billion users, now running on Gemini 3.5 Flash. Conversational search isn't a test anymore — it's increasingly where your buyers start, and where those new ad formats will live.
Universal Cart turns Google into a checkout. A persistent cart across Search, the Gemini app, YouTube, and Gmail, with native checkout — the purchase is moving onto Google's surfaces, away from your site. Your feed is becoming your storefront.
Asset Studio added Gemini Omni for video. Creative generation from a natural-language prompt — which means production speed stops being your edge, and creative judgment becomes the thing a prompt can't replicate.
TOOL OF THE WEEK
GEO Engine — built inside NVM, for practitioners.
Everything above points at one question: are you visible in the AI layer? Most marketers can't answer it. Their SEO says they rank. Their campaigns are live. Whether ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude would actually cite them when a buyer asks — no idea.
GEO Engine answers exactly that. Drop in a URL. Get a full AI-visibility audit: how citable you are across the major AI engines, where your real competitors stand, and the precise content gaps where AI citations are still up for grabs. One URL in. Full picture out. No agency.
How to use it right now: It's in limited beta — invite only. Request an invite at nvm.marketing and you're in the first cohort.
Why this week: Gemini just took over execution and measurement. The one layer it can't grade for you is whether you exist in the answer at all. Check before your competitors do.
MY TAKE
I've migrated enough accounts to know what a forced upgrade does to a portfolio you spent years shaping. It flattens it. So I'm not losing sleep over the new ad formats. I'm thinking about what we stop being able to see.
When the system that runs your campaign also predicts whether it worked, you lose the one thing that made you valuable: the ability to disagree with the platform. To look at a "qualified future conversion" and say no — I've seen this pattern, it doesn't convert.
That instinct doesn't live in any dashboard. It's not a metric Gemini can model. It's the thing you built over a thousand campaigns, and it's the only asset that appreciates while everything else gets automated.
The platforms will keep taking layers. Execution. Measurement. Soon, recommendations shaped to feel like judgment.
That isn't the same thing.
Keep yours sharp.
That's Issue #6 of NVM. If this gave you one thing to act on this week, share it with someone who needs it. Reply to this if you have a question — I read every one. See you next week. — Mostafa
